[Review] Women’s Canyon Jersey & Shorts by Pearl Izumi

I’ve been living in the Canyon Kit by Pearl Izumi and it does not disappoint (it doesn’t smell either!). The Canyon Short Sleeve Jersey and Shorts have exceeded my expectations for a warm weather kit with comfort, style, and functionality. We’ll start with the Jersey and then get into the Shorts further down.

We’ve been living out of the van for 6 weeks now and the Canyon Jersey is the only jersey I’ve worn on the mountain bike and I haven’t even washed it once. Not only is the Canyon Jersey extremely soft and comfortable, it miraculously doesn’t smell yet and we’ve had some very sweaty rides. The jersey is made from recycled polyester (85%) and TENCEL with Dri-Release (15%). Even on the hottest and most humid rides, the jersey didn’t stay wet which is a huge benefit on the rides that linger into the evening when the temps started to drop.

I mention it in the video, but the styling of the Canyon Jersey is awesome because it looks similar to a T-shirt but acts like a fully-featured Jersey. I’d even get another Canyon Jersey to wear hiking or for other outdoor activities.

The fit of this jersey is relaxed like a tee with a drop hem in the back for coverage no matter your positioning, and I’m wearing a size large. I’m 5’10 and 155 pounds and typically wear a medium or large top. Sometimes Pearl Izumi sizing is tough for me. I think I could’ve gotten away with a size medium and not have quite a loose fit. The large is comfortable though and I’d rather have looser than tighter. Overall I love this Jersey and it’s my new go-to. The look is amazing but it’s comfortable no matter how hot or long the ride.

The Canyon Jersey pairs perfectly with the Canyon Shorts. My favorite thing about these shorts is that they have a smooth, elastic waist. There are no zipper or snap or button closures. I’m glad someone is finally doing bike shorts like this. I wear a hip pack and so there’s no weird rubbing or chaffing and it leads to all-day comfort.

The Canyon shorts are constructed with mini ripstop fabric which is essential for desert riding. Even if plants look friendly, they’ll reach out and grab you when you’re least expecting it. Ripstop won’t prevent ripping entirely but if you do happen to catch a snag, it won’t tear for a long run. These shorts are lightweight and breathable and again, great for hot and humid riding.

My biggest complaint with the Canyon shorts is the fit. I typically wear a size 8 in pants/shorts, but knew that Pearl Izumi runs slightly small. I opted for the size 10. Again I’m 5’10 and 155 pounds. The 10s fit perfectly in the waist but are quite tight on my thighs. It’s not uncomfortable at all, because they’re light and have a bit of stretch, but it’s not the most flattering fit. The worst part of the fit is the included Escape Chamois Liner. I feel like the Chamois is two sizes smaller than the shorts. They don’t fit me at all and I ended up just wearing a different chamois with the Canyon shorts. I think ideally if you can try these on in person before buying that would be the best option!

The Canyon shorts include two zippered closure thigh pockets on each side of the shorts. They’re nicely placed, so you can ride with stuff in your pockets and not feel anything. Overall I dig the design of the Canyon Shorts, I just wish the chamois was a better fit (especially because it’s a nice, soft, breathable chamois).

If you’re looking for a warm-weather riding kit, look no further than the Canyon Short Sleeve Jersey and Shorts. You won’t start to stink after your first few rides, and the jersey is so comfy you won’t be rushed to take it off when you finish your ride. I’m also wearing the Canyon SPD cycling shoes resulting in Pearl Izumi-and comfort-head to toe. Be sure to check out that review as well. Canyon Kit

$45-$125

Overall

9.0/10

Pros

  • Comfortable and light for hot weather riding
  • Jersey is extremely soft and can be used for any activity (doesn't look like your traditional jersey)
  • Shorts don't have a button closure, just elastic
  • One zip pocket on the jersey and 2 on the shorts - positioned nicely so you won't feel what's in there

Cons

  • Sizing is a bit off on the shorts and I definitely recommend sizing up one (possibly 2) sizes
  • Chamois feels like it's 3 sizes smaller than the shorts
