When it comes to merino wool layers, my mind immediately thinks base layers for cold weather activities. Luckily for me, I was introduced to Unbound Merino who makes Merino wool gear for all seasons. A personal favorite in their lineup for me are the Essential Shorts. I also had the opportunity to test out the Crew Neck T-Shirt, Compact Travel Hoodie, and the MerinoTencel Sweatpants. Not only is merino wool an amazing fiber, but Unbound Merino has also used it to make some incredibly comfortable, travel-ready pieces.
Most of Unbound’s lineup is made with at least half Merino if not 100% Merino. Merino is an amazing fiber because it is naturally odor resisting, it wicks moisture away from the body, and it is very soft. Personally for me, traveling with the Crew Neck T-Shirt (100% merino) is amazing because it doesn’t start to stink after a day or two of wearing it. Not only can I pack fewer items, I also don’t have to worry about washing them as often. In my opinion, this crew neck tee also holds its shape very well. We all know what day two looks like for a cotton tee and it’s not that flattering. The Crew Neck T-shirt bounces back and stays looking fresh wear after wear.
The Essential Shorts are another favorite because they look really nice (like dress shorts) but they can easily be adapted to outdoor activities. You can head out for a hike and then head to a nice dinner and no one will question it. They are 48% Merino wool, 48% Cotton, and 4% Spandex. They are very flexible, don’t restrict movement at all and are flattering. The inseam length is 8.5 inches and I think that’s the ultimate length. Not too short, not too long, just right! I like the texture that the Essential Shorts have, they are overall a very simple pair of shorts but look really nice. They have your common pockets, two front and two in the back, but there is also a zipper pocket inside a back pocket which is an awesome place to stash cash especially if you’re traveling.
The Compact Travel Hoodie is the perfect layer. It’s one that you can have on you year-round. In the summer, it’s great for those cool nights on the lake. In the winter, layer it under your ski jacket and in the spring and fall, it’s a great hoodie for any adventure. I love the fit of this hoodie and it’s amazingly soft. It’s also lightweight and breathable, again making it the perfect travel companion.
Speaking of fit, the consistency of fit over multiple different pieces in the Unbound line has been impressive. Everything has fit me so well out of the box and I would say everything is true to size. I’m 6’0 tall and 190 pounds and I have everything in a large. The shorts I ordered in my normal 34 size and are a perfect fit.
I know that Unbound Merino gear seems a little bit higher priced than some of the traditional pieces us men care to wear. I truly believe that Merino Wool is the best fiber to have next to your skin because of its comfort, ability to not let me stink as much and sweat-wicking properties. Unbound Merino gear is made with high-quality materials to high standards and it fits amazingly well. This gear is going to be with me for many years to come, and so making the initial investment is easier to do when you know the gear is going to last. Plus most of their gear is easily four-season gear and won’t be spending time sitting in your closet.
Lastly, every time I wear Unbound, my girlfriend can’t stop commenting on how attractive I look! So if that’s not persuasion, I don’t know what is! I think it has to do with the clean look and flattering fit, plus it is just nicer looking than the average shorts and tee. Unbound Merino
VariesPros
- Made with Merino wool which has many benefits
- Sizing is on point
- Comfortable and soft
- PERFECT for travel
- Four season gear
Cons
- I have found that merino takes a little bit longer to dry than your synthetics or cotton but for me, the benefits of Merino outweigh the extra dry time (also not really a con of Unbound, just the fiber itself)
