I love when functionality and style come together and that’s the best way to describe the Silcox Gore-Tex 2L Jacket made my Dakine. The contour and extra long fit is flattering and protects you from the elements. Paired with the Westside Pants by Dakine, I look good and stay warm and dry all day long out there.
At first, I was a little skeptical about layering underneath the contour fit but on those extremely cold days, I’ve been proven otherwise. I can fit a pretty big down layer underneath comfortably. Even with the Primaloft Gold insulation throughout, I wouldn’t classify this as an insulated piece. On cold days I definitely layer up underneath it (which is similar for most ski jackets I own).
The Gore-Tex membrane is guaranteed to keep you dry and I can definitely attest to this. We’ve been doing a lot of skiing here in southern British Columbia, Canada and it is a wet snow. Sometimes it is raining in the parking lot and then will transition to snow higher up. If you find yourself in these conditions often, this jacket will definitely keep you dry.
If you’ve read some of my reviews in the past, you’ll know that I’m very picky about the collar on my ski jacket. This collar is perfect and is a great place to tuck your face on those brutally cold or windy days. It’s not too tight or constrictive so you can still move freely when you have it all the way zipped up. I don’t normally ski with my hood up but this hood will fit up and over a helmet if that’s your thing.
I went with a size large and I couldn’t be happier with the fit of the Silcox (I’m 5’10 and 150 pounds Size 8). I sometimes have to size up to an XL so that the sleeves are long enough but these are plenty long. Like I mentioned above, I wasn’t sure about layering but I’ve layered up pretty intensely under the Silcox and was still able to function.
The cuffs of the sleeves are also roomy but can be adjusted with Velcro. Whether you’re wearing bulky mittens or spring gloves, your cuffs will fit easily over them. The wrist gaiters are also nice because they are big enough/stretchy enough to fit over my mittens. I can keep the pow out and the warmth in without the uncomfortable feeling of putting the gaiters under my gloves or mitts.
I honestly can say that I can’t find one bad thing to say about the Silcox jacket. It looks great, feels great, and performs amazingly no matter what conditions I’m out in. I love the rosewood color paired with my buckskin Westside Pants also made by Dakine. I have a few other ski outerwear combos but I haven’t been able to not slip this one on since I’ve gotten it.
