We’ve been able to put a few miles on the Krios Karbon Adventure Helmet by Klim and we feel as though the perfect description of this helmet is versatile, lightweight and comfortable. The Krios is a great helmet if you find yourself in different riding situations often and need something that can adapt as easily as you can to your riding style. You can easily wear the Krios as a dirt helmet, trail helmet, a dual sport helmet, or a street helmet. No matter where you’re going, the Krios will be there to protect your dome.
Out of the box, one of the first things we noticed about the Krios is how lightweight it is. It weighs in at 3.3 pounds (out of the box, not including our mounted Sena headsets) which doesn’t sound like much of a difference from the 3.6 pound Arai XD4 (what we are coming off of). While it sounds minimal, after a long day of riding that little of a weight difference can make a difference. The Krios feels light when you put it on and take it off at the end of the day. The Krios is the only adventure helmet weighing under 1500 grams in North America. The result of the Krios is evidence that Klim is breaking boundaries when it comes to adventure helmet standards.
The versatility comes in to play with the visor and shield of the Krios. This is a quick release system that requires no tools and is quick and easy to adapt. You can remove both the visor and the shield or one or the other. The easy transformation of this helmet really means to me that you are getting a lot for your money. Maybe you’re like us and you ride a lot of dirt and trail and only a little pavement. It would be a shame for us to have to go spend a lot of money on a helmet that was only for pavement/high speeds. Simply remove the visor and you have a really great helmet for riding pavement. If you are heading out on the trails, just remove the shield and throw your goggles on. This feature stands out to us as extremely important and valuable.
The comfort of the Krios is also something you’ll notice right out of the box. The liner is noticeably softer up against my skin than my other helmets and doesn’t feel rough at all up against my cheeks. The material is also anti-microbial/bacterial and fast-wicking so it won’t start to stink after the first sweaty hour of the day.
The vent system adds to the overall comfort of the Krios and keeps you cool when you start to overheat. There is the traditional chin vent and then an intake vent under the visor. There are four exhaust vents on the back of the helmet and it’s easy to tell that these vents were strategically placed for optimal airflow. If you’re riding in chillier temps, simply close the top vent which is easy to do while you’re riding/with gloves on.
The Krios comes with both a clear and a smoke tinted shield and again, being so easy to change, you could easily do so throughout the day. We both prefer to wear sunglasses with our dual sport helmets so we usually keep the clear shield in at all times. The shield is also equipped with a Pinlock® ready system which helps immensely to cut back on fogging.
Of course, you can be wearing the safest helmet on the market but none of it would matter if it doesn’t fit you properly. Wearing a loose helmet is just as bad as not wearing a helmet so if you’re in the market for a Krios, I would find a place where you can go in and try one on. I really wish they offered an XS, because in certain ways, I feel like the small could be tighter for the optimal fit. Tyson got the medium (which is actually the same shell size as the small) and he put size small cheek pads in it to make it fit just a bit snugger. Know that if you walk into a store and you don’t love the fit out of the box, there are a few ways you can customize the fit. For me, I think the XS would be perfect but I know that that adds a lot to production etc.
The Sena Bluetooth headsets integrate seamlessly with the Krios and the install and setup was quick and easy. It sounds silly, but the cheek pads by your ears are made specifically to house speakers for a headset and the extra space really makes a nice difference! In the Arai, there is just a little bit of room and we find that we are always adjusting our earpieces after putting the helmet on. Very small detail, but adds a lot to comfort!
One last notable feature to mention is the visor. It does a nice job of keeping the harsh sun out of your eyes, but it is actually very receptive to wind. In comparison to other dual sport helmets, I feel like the Krios really doesn’t whip your head around. Of course, if you are on the interstate riding 80mph and have a crosswind, there’s not really any way around that but in most normal circumstances, we’ve noticed that the buffeting is not as bad. (Plus if you are traveling highways, simply take the visor off for your highway days)
The Krios Karbon Adventure Helmet is a lightweight, versatile, and comfortable dual sport riding helmet that can be adapted to all riding styles. The liner is soft and supple up against your skin, the vents optimize airflow, and the easy visor and shield customization ensures you’re set up for the right ride. Not only are you getting an amazingly comfortable and light helmet, you’re getting a helmet that you can use for every ride you do. No more filling the garage with too many helmets to count. Klim Krios
$549.99Pros
- Lightest adventure helmet on the US market
- Essentially a 4-in-1 helmet
- Easy to adapt from street to dirt etc.
- Seemless integration with Sena headsets (there is esp a lot of space in the ear cups for the headsets which is really nice)
- Adequate airflow/venting
Cons
- Wish there were a few more sizing options
- The first notch on the shield is just a tad high, lets a little bit too much air in when you're just trying to clear the fog
