The Verglas Down Insulator by Helly Hansen is the perfect multi-season layer that every wardrobe should include. The color ways are stylish so as not to compromise your style on those cold days.
This lightweight and packable layer was perfect for our recent motorcycle trip. I almost didn’t bring it but am so glad that I did because I wore it almost everyday except for when we were in Baja Sur and the temps were a little bit more friendly. If I didn’t wear it during the day under my motorcycle jacket, I wore it at night around camp.
When I wasn’t wearing the Verglas Down jacket it took up hardly any space in my luggage. The fillpower is 700+ (allied down 85/15 European goose) but is not nearly as bulky as the 700 fillpower you would imagine.
The fabric Helly Hansen uses is a Pertex microlight ripstop fabric and it held up very well to the abuse I threw at it. Whether rubbing against tree branches while setting up camp or slipping my motorcycle protection over it, the Verglas came out unscathed.
I didn’t put this jacket away when we got back from our Baja trip, and it is in deed one that you will never have to store. I have been using it as a layer for skiing, and with the ability to zip in as a liner jacket with any of the CIS Helly Hansen compatible shells, it can be extra beneficial for the winter months. Whether it will zip in to my outerlayer or not, this will be a great insulating piece for the cold cold days. It will keep me warm but won’t affect my movement because of bulkiness.
Whether I’m skiing powder on cold days, camping in Moab in the springtime, or embarking on motorcycle trips, I love having a layer that will do it all. It’s so easy to justify adding something like this to your jacket quiver, as you will never have to store it and will always have a packable, warm option at your fingertips (especially for those moto trips that you think will be super hot the entire time, but will actually find yourself cold most of the trip).
