[Review] The Rebar Sunglasses by SPY

Sunglasses, but they’re ANSI Z87-2+ certified and they look like normal sunglasses! The Rebar Sunglasses by SPY take a normal pair of sunglasses up a notch and offer ultimate protection. SPY leaves nothing on the table when it comes to innovation in their sunglasses and between the ANSI protection and Happy Boost Lens, the Rebar are the perfect sunglasses for work and play. 

First of all, I’ve worn SPY sunglasses for years and have always enjoyed the Happy Lens. The Happy lens provides amazing color and contrast and makes for a very enjoyable viewing experience while protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. The Happy Boost, is a step above the traditional Happy Lens. The Happy Boost lens provides amazing, vivid color and contrast while “maintaining an optimum white balance, and enhancing colors without sacrificing others” (spy.com). The lenses are polarized which is important for minimizing eye fatigue by reducing glare off of shiny, smooth, or flat surfaces. Where polarization really comes into play is when you’re spending a lot of time around water or snow. You will feel the difference at the end of the day if you’re wearing polarized lenses. In addition to glare reduction, the Happy Boost lens also has an anti-reflective coating on the backside of the lens. Lastly, Happy Boost lenses include a hydro-oleophobic coating that repels oil and water. This ensures you can work through whatever chaos you’ve found yourself in. Whether that’s at work, deep sea fishing, or out in the backcountry on the snowmobile. This coating is hugely beneficial if you’re wearing these on a job where you need safety glasses but also UV protection. 

The Happy Boost Lens is definitely a distinguishing feature of the Rebars, but they’re also built for work and play. They’re built with Grilamid which is a material that SPY has been building with for a long time. There is no doubt in my mind that Grilamid is some tough stuff, as I have used and abused SPY’s for a long time and still, the frames are intact as they should be. It’s a light and durable material that we’ve found to be indestructible. 

In addition to the Rebars being ultra-protective for my eyes, they’re also very comfortable. They have venting along the side to allow for airflow and rubber placement on the temple tips and nose pieces to keep them in place no matter what you’re doing. They are comfortable with a hat, hard hat, or helmet.
