[Review] The Release N Run Collar + Leash by Rad Dog

Hank’s grown up not really being on a leash, which has its pluses and minuses. He loves the freedom when we’re out on the trail, however, he doesn’t always listen and he has a tendency to follow his nose. The Release N Run Collar + Leash by Rad Dog is seriously one of the best pieces of dog gear that we’ve gotten and it’s something we wish we had way sooner!

Essentially, the Release N Run Collar is a collar that has a built-in, retractable leash. Now your off-leash dog can have the freedom to run and you don’t have to carry a leash. It’s there when or if you need it and is especially great for emergency situations (encountering wildlife/mean dog/someone who doesn’t like dogs etc.).

The collar is built from high quality yet lightweight Cordura® which has proven to be strong and durable. I love that they have many color options, and we opted for the hunter orange to keep Hank safe if we’re out during hunting season and for just better visibility in general.

The retractable leash has worked flawlessly. After reading the materials that came with the Release N Run, I was a little nervous as it mentioned it was not well suited for dogs who pull hard. Hank is really bad on a leash and has a tendency to pull. We have not had any issues with the Release N Run though and I feel like maybe since I’m just “leashing” him for moments at a time, it is no big deal.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that the mechanism makes a bit of noise as the leash is extending and retracting. Hank is a bit skittish about some things, especially weird noises and big hats. He seemed to be a little freaked out when we first put the collar on him, however after his first hike, he didn’t care at all.

It’s surprisingly nice not to have to carry a leash with us, on adventures long and short. It’s one less thing to worry about and carry! If your dog is predominantly an off-leash dog, we would highly recommend the Release N Run. No matter what activity you’re up to outside with your dog, the Release N Run is a safe, reliable, and minimal collar to have.
