My go-to ice climbing pants this season were the Odin Skarstind Pant by Helly Hansen. They’re the perfect combination of breathable and lightweight fabric, ultra waterproof protection, and complete mobility without restriction. Whether you’re looking for a mountaineering pant or an ice climbing pant, the Odin Skarstind will outperform it’s competition in more ways than one.
Built with Helly Hansen’s Helly Tech Professional fabric, the Skarstind Pants will keep you protected from even the harshest of elements. It’s hard to believe how much they will protect you combined with how light they are. In high wear areas, there is a more durable material vs low wear areas. The Skarstind pants are waterproof, windproof, breathable & fully seam sealed. They’re bombproof but without thick, restricting fabric.
I really like the fit of the Skarstind pants. They are perfect in length and in the waist and they are a bit of a slim fit so as not to have extra material weighing you down or getting caught up with your crampons. I’m 6’0 tall and 190 pounds and wearing the size large. The cuffs offer a TON of adjustability so you can really keep the pant cuffs out of your way. This is ideal for ice climbing. I don’t need to wear gators to keep my pants out of my way. The one thing I will mention is that if you plan on skiing with these pants, there will be a potential for ripping the cuffs on your ski edges. I always have this issue if the cuffs aren’t reinforced. These would be a great spring touring pant, but just keep that in mind!
The Odin Skarstind pants look simple, heck they are simple, but the protection they provide against the harshest of elements is unmatched. They fit well, perform well, and won’t weigh you down.
