If you could only buy one insulator jacket for the next 10 years, let this be the one. The Odin Lifaloft Hybrid Jacket by Helly Hansen includes a mix of synthetic and down insulation, body mapping technology keeping you warm where you need it most and is an amazing fit. I also dig the bright colorways and you will too if color is your thing. While this is a fairly lightweight jacket (weighing in at 13.7 ounces) and insanely packable, it’s warmer than most jackets I have that are larger and bulkier. The Odin Lifaloft Hybrid is my go-to insulated layer and I’ve found myself overheating in it and have yet to get cold while wearing it.
You can read all about LifaLoft technology on the Helly Hansen website but in short, LifaLoft is a proprietary synthetic insulation that is lightweight and packable and also still insulates when it gets wet. The hybrid name comes from the mix of LifaLoft technology paired with down insulation. Down insulation is extremely warm for its weight but loses its insulating properties when it gets wet. The LifaLoft is placed in areas that are more susceptible to getting wet while the down insulation is placed in areas that need maximum warmth like your core.
I really like the fit of this jacket and it’s great whether I’m throwing it under a shell for skiing or wearing it on its own for dog walks. I’m 6’0 tall and 190 pounds and I’m wearing the size large.
The Odin LifaLoft Hybrid Jacket is simple yet well thought out. There’s a chest pocket and two hand pockets, all with zipper closures. There’s also a cinch on the bottom hem if you prefer to have it tight up against your body. The hood is a good size, though a little too small in my opinion to fit over a ski/snowboard helmet. I can fit the hood over a climbing helmet but as you can see in the video, there is not a ton of extra space. It would definitely work in a pinch but if you are someone who has to wear your hood over your helmet, you may be disappointed with the excess space.
We’ve been wearing Helly Hansen’s LifaLoft products for the past few years and we don’t have enough good things to say about them. The LifaLoft and Down Hybrid is the best of both worlds and you won’t be disappointed if this is your main insulator this winter.
