Between the town and the amazing mountain that is Crested Butte, we definitely think if you’re looking for the ultimate cozy/fun/romantic getaway and not to mention – world-class inbounds terrain – Crested Butte is one of the best places to head in Colorado. Having lived there for a couple of years, we may be a bit biased but it truly is an incredible place to visit in the winter.
Beautiful scenery and amazing restaurants accompany fun and challenging terrain. The mountain as a whole is huge and has a lot to offer for the entire family. On powder days, the steep and deep terrain is endless. We were always finding new lines when we lived in CB and when we went back this year, there was a lot that we explored that we had never even touched when we lived there.
On our first run, (it was a 4 inch powder Sunday) we headed up the Silver Queen to more or less the top of the mountain and then skied over to the High Lift T-Bar to get to the steep terrain. Usually on powder days you can make this haul for most of the morning and find fresh lines. Of course, the popular chutes like the Headwall will get skied out faster than Teocalli Bowls, which require a 10-15 minute hike out. If you’re lucky to be on one of the first chairs on a powder day, International is always a fun groomer to bomb down before heading up into the steeper terrain.
Whether you’re like myself and you like fun, flowy, and somewhat steep lines or you want to drop anywhere from small to large cliffs, this mountain has it all. The town and mountain is very kid and family friendly, and the free shuttles into town from the mountain make getting around stress-free and easy. I remember visiting CB in the summer as a very young kid and my sister and I explored the mountain and then went into town to walk around while my mom was in a conference all day. It’s that small mountain town feel that will make you feel like you’re home.
If you’re staying at Crested Butte for a few weeks or a few days, there’s no way you’ll get bored both on and off the mountain. If you do get bored, just drive around and let yourself get lost in the amazing views that surround you. While it’s a bit more of a hike to get to from Denver than I-70 resorts, the cozy mountain town feel will make up for that increased drive.
