KTM has made wiring accessories into your motorcycle somewhat of a straightforward process. By removing the headlight, you can gain easy access to the accessory plugs that they provide. Depending on the year, there is debate about the exact location of accessory 1 and accessory 2 plug but they are both labeled and will usually be tucked away amongst the cluster of other wires.
On my 2007 990, accessory plug 1 is always hot (when the key is on or off). Accessory 2 is only hot when the key is on. This is nice as you cannot run the battery dead if you forget to turn off your device when you shut the motorcycle down. Understandably so, I wired my Garmin GPS into accessory 2.
From my local auto parts store I bought spade connectors which I attached to the power and ground wire of the GPS. From there, it was as simple as plugging the ground slide in connector and the power slide in connector into the appropriate terminals on the accessory 2 plug.
As far as the Garmin side of things, they send you enough wire to wire in your Zumo and about 12 other Zumos (and different kinds of accessories like mics etc.). If you don’t want to cut the wiring apart, the hardest part of the whole install process is finding a place to put the huge coil of extra wire.
Whether you’re wiring in heated grips, lights, a GPS, or any other accessories, the process is the same. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out!
