[Review] The EcoPucks Bluetooth Helmet Audio by ECOXGEAR

The EcoPucks by ECOXGEAR are helmet compatible audio pucks designed for the ultimate ski day. They’re perfect for listening to music while you shred, finding your friends on the mountain with the Walkie Talkie feature, and for controlling your smartphone (decline those work calls when you’re out “sick”). Most notably, the EcoPucks Walkie Talkie feature works extremely well and we’ll tell you why below.

ECOXGEAR collaborated with Zello, a well-known communications app (over 100 million downloads) for the Walkie Talkie function of the EcoPucks. Zello specializes in comm apps which is what makes the feature work so well. We’ve had various helmet audio with similar features and it just has never worked as well as Zello. Zello is a free app that you download on your smartphone. You have to register for an account (totally free) and then you can start using the app. You can even use the app without the EcoPucks. The app essentially turns your smartphone into a walkie talkie. One thing to note is that you must have cell phone service for the walkie talkie feature to work. Whether you get a new phone or update your current phone, Zello is up to standard. 

The Walkie Talkie function works well when you have cell phone service and is easy to set up. Once you are logged in to Zello, you simply open the app before you head out skiing and keep it in the background of your phone. Then you can hold down the right EcoPuck, wait for the chime and then start talking. We love this feature for skiing and especially for when we are in the backcountry taking photos or videos, we can easily direct each other and always know what’s going on.

We both appreciate the large raised buttons on the outside of the EcoPucks. They are easy to find even with thick mittens on. There are many features that the two buttons control so it does take a few days of skiing and using them to really feel comfortable with what button controls which feature. The included cheat sheet is simple, small and easy to reference on the chairlift.

As far as audio quality, these are obviously going to be different than an in-ear experience. They’re not a mind-blowing sound, but they are good especially for the price point. The deep bass sounds are a little echoey but again work well for what they are. If you’re the type of person who likes to listen to your music mind-numbingly loud, you’re going to appreciate these.

If you’re looking for in-helmet audio, the EcoPucks by ECOXGEAR are affordable, easy to use, and include a Walkie Talkie feature that works extremely well (with cell phone service). The EcoPucks will enable you to listen to tunes, keep up with where your friends are, and use voice assistance from your phone. They’re also IPX7 so no matter how deep or how wet the snow is that you’re shredding, the EcoPucks will be unaffected.
