The Ripper by Domio is a helmet audio system, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Unlike most helmet audio systems that use traditional speakers, the Ripper transfers sound by vibrational energy through your helmet! The sound quality is superb and the system is easy to install and use.
The Ripper comes with two mounts that are backed by 3M making them easy to mount and install and also allowing you to use the Ripper on multiple helmets if you need. For me, I’ve found that the most ideal spot to mount the ripper is on the top of the helmet. It transfers the sound well from there as well as the fact that it won’t interfere with my googles. While I believe the Ripper works really well here, I don’t love the look of it mounted to the top of the helmet.
Sound quality is unmatched with the Domio Ripper and it’s a wild experience that you almost have to try to believe. Unlike some other in helmet audio systems I’ve tried, the Ripper produces a really rich and deep sound. It’s nice to not have any wires, cords, or speakers running throughout the helmet. An added benefit to not having the traditional speaker or headphone system is that you do not have direct sound in your ear. This allows you to better hear your surroundings.
While I’m thoroughly impressed with the sound experience from the Ripper, I will say I was surprised by how much you can hear the music on the outside of the helmet/device. I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m not a huge fan of the fact that you can hear my music while skiing. If I’m in the backcountry or using my helmet for other activities such as paragliding, it’s not such a big deal. But I really don’t like to be the one playing my music for all to hear on the chair lift. I suppose you could get in the habit of simply pausing your music for the lift rides but in an ideal situation, I would get the incredible sound from the Ripper and no one else would be able to hear it.
Using the Ripper is simple and you get used to what buttons do what after the first day of using it. The Ripper works purely as a music device and doesn’t let you talk with your phone/on phone calls/etc. We’re excited to see how this technology evolves over time and we are guessing that the functionality will be built upon in the coming years.
The Ripper is weatherproof and even in the gnarliest weather situations, I haven’t had an issue with it. The battery life lasts up to 24 hours of playtime and I’ve found this to vary slightly if I’m listening to my music really loud or if it’s really cold out. We skied in Steamboat recently and at -17º the Ripper still worked well.
