[Review] The Cliff Shell Bib by Orage

Designed to keep even the harshest of conditions at bay, the Cliff Shell Bibs by Orage are not only waterproof, they’re durable and breathable and have an amazing ventilation system. They’re also easy to pee in. If you have tried multiple pairs of bibs you’ll know that there’s a test that bibs need to pass. For me personally, the Cliff Bibs are some of the easiest bibs I own for peeing. Not only does the design make for easy pit stops, the venting system is ideal for long backcountry days.

I really dig the system of these bibs for us ladies to use the bathroom with. It’s quick, easy, and accessible, and won’t make peeing in the backcountry (or anywhere for that matter) any more of a hassle then it needs to be. With how the Cliff Bibs are designed, the venting system is nearly 3/4 the length of the bibs and allows for ample air flow. With the double zip, you can get airflow precisely where you need it most. Of course, there is no mesh paneling so it’s best to zip the vents for the ski down so you don’t fill your pants with snow. For skinning up in the backcountry, being able to get so much airflow is ideal and helps to limit the amount of sweat I produce.

As far as fit goes, I love the fit of the bottom portion of these bibs. From the waist down, the fit couldn’t be more spot on. I also like how these pants aren’t overly bagging which also makes them great for ice climbing. The length of the large is perfect for me and I’m 5’10 and 155 pounds. The problem I have with the fit is the upper portion of the bibs. It’s box like and almost just looks like a potato sack on. It’s not the end of the world if I’m wearing a down layer underneath, that makes it less noticeable, but if I’m just wearing a base layer, the fit is not flattering. I really wish that Orage would’ve put some adjustability in here. There are stretchy mesh panels but with how far off the bibs are from my body, they don’t really do a whole lot. I wish it weren’t an issue because literally from the waist down, these bibs are a perfect fit.

Since I’m griping at the moment, I’ll go on to say that the pockets are very small and kind of hard to fit anything of sustenance in them. This is probably major personal preference but I can’t seem to fit stuff in my pockets without feeling the bulk on the way up or down. If they had a titch more space, they’d be more usable for me.

I absolutely can speak to the durability of the Cliff Shell Bibs. We spent a few days in the backcountry in Wyoming and not only was our skin track going through thick trees, we were also skiing down through thick trees. These bibs gladly took the abuse I was throwing at them and handled it without issue – they still look brand new.

If you’re looking for a bomber backcountry bib, look no further than the Cliff Shell Bib. You’ll be impressed with the durability and dry and warm thanks to the waterproofing. I paired my Cliff Shell Bibs with the Zoe Jacket and not only am I warm and dry no matter the weather, I’m also super stylish out there! Overall

9.0/10

Pros

  • Perfect length and tightness in the legs
  • Waterproof/weatherproof yet still very comfortable and easy to move in
  • So so easy to use the bathroom in (best system I've tried yet for bibs in this regard)
  • 3/4 length venting is incredible

Cons

  • I love these bibs so much but the fit at the torso portion is just way off. Everything else about them is incredible but the upper fit is a bummer for me.
