If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that I’m a huge fan of Danner. I’ve had the Women’s Mountain Pass for several years and have put more miles in them than any other boot I’ve ever had. The Mountain Pass is definitely my go-to outdoor shoe (even though I wear it for way more than just hiking) and so I wanted to test out a pair of work boots by Danner. The Women’s Bull Run Moc Toe boots are ideal for long days in the shop and look good too. I’m all for functional work boots but I shamelessly want to look good too. The Bull Runs check all the boxes and then some.
These are made with an unlined leather which makes them great for hot weather work. You’re getting the protection that leather provides, yet they’re still breathable. Because of Danner’s oiling method, these boots are more water-resistant and they require less maintenance. I’m really not good at maintaining my leather boots, plus I start to really like the look of them once they’re worn in so I’m hesitant to treat them with something that will change the overall look. Even though these boots are geared towards warmer weather, I made sure I chose a size that would work with thicker socks. They are by no means winter boots but I can wear them in the winter with thicker socks and it works!
The outsole is one reason why these are comfortable, all-day work boots. They’re made with the Danner Wedge which is a softer outsole, provides cushioning, and is nice and light. The Danner Wedge is non-marking and provides ample tracking. This sole is ideal for smooth, hard surfaces like wood or concrete. It’s not recommended on a surface like asphalt as it will likely wear faster. I’m working on a combination of wood, concrete, and asphalt. I know that these soles won’t last as long but I’m willing to work around that. So far I haven’t seen any unusual wear points and I’m overall happy with the outsole! It provides great traction on the airplane wing, which can get extremely slick if it gets wet.
Sizing is an important topic to touch on. Danner’s site says these fit true to size but I had to size down a half a size. I typically wear a size 8 but got these in a size 7.5. I feel as though I almost could have sized down to a 7 but I wouldn’t have been able to wear thicker socks with them, which was key for me.
The Bull Run Moc Toes are made in the USA and they are made so well. These boots are a work of art, and I was pretty bummed to actually start using them for what they’re meant for, as it meant I had to get them dirty. Not only are these extremely comfortable, but also offer ample protection, and provide the traction I need, they look rad too. If you need a badass work boot, check out the Bull Run Moc Toes here and if you need a more hiking orientated boot that you’ll wear for years and years, check out the Danner Mountain Pass here.
